Trump Plans 100% Tariff on Foreign-Made Movies, Calling Them a 'National Security Threat'

President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States. He believes that foreign film productions are harming the American movie industry, which he says is "dying a very fast death."

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated:

"This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda."

He has directed the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to begin implementing the tariff immediately. However, details about how the tariff will be applied, especially concerning streaming services, remain unclear.

The announcement has raised concerns in the global film industry. Countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, which often collaborate with U.S. studios, fear the tariffs could negatively impact their film sectors. For instance, the UK film industry, which generated £5.6 billion in 2024, relies heavily on international productions.

Industry experts warn that the tariffs might lead to fewer international films being shown in the U.S., reducing diversity in movie offerings. Additionally, American studios that film abroad to take advantage of tax incentives could face increased costs.

While some support the move as a way to bolster domestic film production, others argue it could lead to trade disputes and limit creative collaborations across borders.
