Black Sherif Makes History: Ghana's Sole Nominee at 2025 BET Awards
Ghanaian music sensation Black Sherif has achieved a significant milestone by securing a nomination in the Best International Act category at the 2025 BET Awards. This nomination marks him as Ghana's only contender in this prestigious category, highlighting his growing influence on the global music scene.
The 'Kwaku the Traveller' hitmaker is set to compete against a diverse lineup of international artists, including Tyla (South Africa), Rema and Ayra Starr (Nigeria), Any Gabrielly and MC Luanna (Brazil), Basky and Ezra Collective (UK), Uncle Waffles (Eswatini), Joé Dwèt Filé and SDM (France).
The BET Awards ceremony is scheduled for June 9, 2025, with American rapper Kendrick Lamar leading the nominations this year. Lamar has garnered over 10 nods, including Video of the Year for his track "Not Like Us" and Album of the Year for "GNX."
Black Sherif's nomination is particularly noteworthy as it signifies Ghana's return to one of BET's most esteemed categories. In previous years, Ghanaian artists such as Kojo Antwi, D Black, Sarkodie, R2Bees, Stonebwoy, Fuse ODG, Kwesi Arthur, MzVee, and Camidoh have also received recognition from the BET Awards.
This is Black Sherif's first appearance in the main BET Awards ceremony. However, he previously earned a BET Hip Hop Award nomination in 2023, which he won, solidifying his status as one of Africa's rising music stars.
Currently, his new album "Iron Boy" is gaining significant traction, topping multiple streaming charts and reaffirming his relevance in both local and international music scenes.
According to Ghanaian media personality Ebenezer Donkoh (NYDJ), Black Sherif's nomination is historic. He explained, "Black Sherif's nomination in the Best International Act category makes him the first Ghanaian artiste to earn a nomination in this rebranded category since BET merged the ‘Best International Act: Africa’ and ‘Best International Act: UK’ awards in 2018."
This nomination not only honors Black Sherif's talent and hard work but also places Ghana firmly back on the global music awards stage.
