KGL Foundation Partners RAAM Foundation To Champion Community Action Against SGBV and Human Rights Abuses in Central Tongu District
The fight against Social and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and human rights abuses has received a major boost in the Central Tongu District, thanks to a powerful collaboration led by RAAM Foundation with support from the KGL Foundation.
In a recent multi-stakeholder engagement, key players from different sectors came together to strategize on how to build stronger community-based systems to respond to SGBV and protect human rights.
The meeting brought together representatives from the Health Directorate, CHRAJ, DOVVSU, Social Welfare, GES, the Traditional Council, Assembly Members, the media, and various community structures.
Participants discussed the different forms of abuse affecting communities—physical, emotional, and economic abuse—as well as systemic challenges such as underreporting, weak follow-up mechanisms, limited resources, and inactive child protection structures.
To address these issues, stakeholders made several key recommendations. These included:
- Strengthening collaboration between statutory bodies and traditional authorities.
- Boosting legal literacy to help community members understand and exercise their rights.
- Resourcing DOVVSU and CHRAJ to improve their effectiveness in handling cases.
- Reviving community protection structures to create a stronger, more coordinated response to abuse.
This initiative has laid a solid foundation for a more united, community-driven approach to tackling SGBV and promoting human rights in Central Tongu. By combining statutory and traditional efforts, the district is taking bold steps toward creating safer spaces for everyone—especially women, children, and vulnerable groups.
