Afenyo-Markin Waives Parliamentary Immunity, Files Counter-Complaint in Police Assault Investigation

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has voluntarily waived his parliamentary immunity to assist the Ghana Police Service in an investigation concerning an alleged altercation with a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) initiated the probe following a formal request to Speaker Alban Bagbin, who directed the Effutu MP to cooperate fully with law enforcement.

In an unexpected development, Afenyo-Markin has filed a counter-complaint, alleging that he was the victim of assault by the same officer, identified as Constable Forson. He recounted that while leading demonstrators to Parliament House to present a petition advocating for greater judicial independence, he was struck on the left side of his chest by Constable Forson. “The blow left me momentarily dazed and struggling to breathe,” he stated. He received immediate assistance from parliamentary security staff and fellow protestors before resuming the petition presentation.

Afenyo-Markin's decision to waive his parliamentary immunity and report to the police underscores a commitment to transparency and accountability. The initiation of parallel investigations into both the initial allegation and the counter-complaint highlights the complexities involved in maintaining order during public demonstrations. As the investigations proceed, the outcomes will be pivotal in addressing concerns about law enforcement conduct and the rights of public officials during civic engagements.
